Pub managementPub or bar management is hard work with long taxing hours and is no suited to every one yet many have taken up the challenge, and for many that has been at their peril. If you own a pub or bar and are feeling the strain or are begging to feel more that a little burnt out then you might consider employing a pub or bar manager to ease the strain. The key points to employing a good bar or pub manager or even a steward for a club are as follows. They must be qualified with a personal licence. They must be good communicators, especially with customers, though they should not be encourage to form a click or select band of regulars. Confident and quick thinking Must be fresh - not from a long pedigree of pub management, if they are they may be just as burnt out as you are! Honest and very hardworking, do a CRB check on them, and even a credit check might be an idea The correct age, you wouldn't take on a 60 year old to run a night club and you wouldn't take on 20 year old to run a quiet locals pub Try to employ one new to the area, they tend to take more of a interest of what's going on an your customers will love guiding them Don't employ a know it all whom just won't be told but just enjoys telling Take on one that is willing to accept a bonus scheme to boost their pay - it encourages them to make you money Avoid friends or family - you may well end up falling out over issues that have nothing to do with the business Only offer a three year contract at most. Once employed give them the permission to implement their ideas and don't interfere - you will end up in your old stayed ways A good Landlord or Landlady will enjoy the hours, the life and the customers. They will be able to meet and greet your customers and mix well with all your customers. One of the main limits of a pub is it's customer base or locals keep this circle to small and your customers base will shrink. I think that everyone who has ever visited a pub has spotted a certain click or chosen few that have the managers ear and have felt left out or abandoned.
